I Lost—and I Loved It.

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Just recently, I joined my first-ever Filipino Speech Contest in an evaluation speech organized by Pilipinas Toastmasters Club and IAME Toastmasters Club.

Last-minute. No coaching. Minimal prep.
Just heart, courage, and a deep desire to grow.

I made it all the way to the Grand Finals.
But—I didn’t place.

“Sayang.” (Such a pity.)
“I could’ve done better.”
“What did I do wrong?”

But here’s the real beauty of joining a speech contest—

It’s not just about the results.
It’s about who you are becoming along the way.

Sometimes, we’re too hard on ourselves.
Too quick to critique.
Too focused on what went wrong instead of what went right.

But this time, I chose to reframe it.
I shifted from asking:

“What did I do wrong?”
to
“What can I do better next time?”
and
“What did I learn about myself in the process?”

My husband said something that hit me hard—but in a good way.

I told him I felt sad.
That I thought I had a shot at a podium finish.
And he simply said:

“You joined last minute. No prep. That’s a learning experience. Next year, you’ll do better.”

It clicked.
He was right.

Failure makes us human.

It humbles us.
It pushes us to become better.
It reminds us: you’re not done. You’re just beginning.

Through Toastmasters, I’ve been slowly shattering my self-doubt.
Speech by speech. Try after try.
Not just learning to speak—but learning to leap.

I used to wait until I felt “ready.”
Now I jump—even when I’m scared.
Because win or lose, the moment you try—you’ve already won.

So here’s to the firsts.

To joining late but showing up anyway.
To not placing, but still finishing proud.
To making it to the Grand Finals—what an honor.

This experience reminded me that growth doesn’t always look like gold medals.
Sometimes it looks like tears, courage, and clarity.

And I’m keeping it all.

No comparison. No rush. Just growth.

We all have our own timelines.
Some rise fast. Others rise slowly. But all of us are rising—when we keep going.

If today, you’re just a little more confident, a little more brave, or a little more free than yesterday—you’re already winning.

You don’t have to prove anything to anyone.
You just have to keep becoming who God made you to be.

You’re not here by accident.

Keep going.
You’re not just learning to speak.
You’re learning to believe you’re worth hearing.
