How I Found My Voice After 7 Years on the Sidelines

For seven years, I said no.

No to every invite.
No to joining Toastmasters.
No to the idea that I had something worth saying.

I wasn’t shy. I just believed I wasn’t ready.
I thought confidence came after perfection.
So I sat on the sidelines—supporting others, hiding my voice, telling myself,
“Next time. Next season. Not yet.”

But here’s the truth:
Confidence doesn’t come when you’re ready.
It comes when you decide to stop shrinking.

👣 Step 1: Start Where You Are

You don’t need a perfect title, background, or bio.
What you need is a starting point.

My “starting point” wasn’t glamorous.
I was a full-time working mom, exhausted, uncertain, and just trying to keep up.
But I showed up to one meeting.
Then another.
And slowly, I realized…

You don’t become confident by staying silent.
You become confident by doing the thing scared, messy, and still showing up.

🧭 Step 2: Know What You Want to Say

Before I ever stood behind a lectern, I learned to ask:
“What’s the one thing I want them to remember?”

This changed everything.

You don’t need to say it all. You just need to say one thing clearly.
That’s what makes people listen—and that’s what makes you memorable.

Speak with intention, not just information.

🎯 Step 3: Speak to Them, Not at Them

Toastmasters taught me structure.
But life taught me empathy.

I stopped performing and started connecting. I asked:

  • Who’s listening?
  • What do they need?
  • How can I speak from my own story—but make it about them, too?

Whether you’re pitching an idea, leading a team, or giving a toast—
know your audience.
It’s not about sounding smart.
It’s about being felt.

🎤 Step 4: Practice Like You Mean It

Preparation isn’t just rehearsing in your head.
Confidence is built in movement. Repetition. Reality.

Here’s how I prepare:

  • I walk around while speaking out loud
  • I time myself
  • I listen to my tone and tweak my words
  • I record myself and cringe… then keep going

The goal isn’t to be perfect.
It’s to be present.

🔁 Step 5: Keep Going, Even When It’s Not Pretty

Confidence isn’t a one-time achievement.
It’s a decision you keep making every time you speak up—

  • Even when your hands shake.
  • Even when your voice cracks.
  • Even when you forget your next point.

I’ve had all those moments. I still do.
But now I speak with a different fire—not to prove anything, but to serve.

🛑 Before You Go…

If this sounds like where you are—on the sidelines, second-guessing, stuck in your head—
I’ve been there. And I’m telling you:

You don’t need to be perfect to start.
You just need to start.

And if you’re ready to work on that message, that story, that voice—
I’d love to help.
Not with scripts. Not with fluff.
Just real, clarity-driven support from someone who’s been there.

Hi, I’m glad you’re here.

You don’t have to know it all.
You just need to know what matters.

Keep going.
You’re not just learning to speak.
You’re learning to believe you’re worth hearing.
